By Paul S Boyer
Simple to install, and very reliable. The Thunderbolt cable comes included only with this 8TB model. I switched the unit to Raid 1, which was not as simple as it should have been because of the out-of-date instructions. Also, the Thunderbolt cable must be attached from the computer to the upper of the two Thunderbolt ports on the drive enclosure, or else it will not be possible to change the RAID configuration. I don't know why this is so, but we had to go to an advanced tech support person at WD to find this out.
Other than that, this is a very useful and well made solution to storage. It is secure in it bavckup capabilities in RAID 1, and it is wide enough that it will not get knocked over easily.

By Paul Sterne
I use the Thunderbolt Duo for storage and editing of large video files. It is connected to my 17" MacBookPro (released in February, 2011 MacBookPro8,3.) I use version 10.6.8 of Mac OS X (Snow Leopard.)
The main advantage of the Thunderbolt Duo is fast access to large files. The BlackMagic Disk Speed Test reports reads and write above 250 MB/s. The highest data transfer rate I could observe using a RAID set with the identical drives in docking stations was around 150MB/s.
Faster data access may be possible with a solid state drive (SSD) but the cost per gigabyte would be much higher.
An important second advantage is the opportunity for an end user with minimal technical training to replace the drives inside the Thunderbolt Duo. Drive replacement is not as convenient as it would be with a hard drive docking station, because two mounting screws and a pull tab must be removed from each of the two old drives and inserted onto each of the two new drives. Some practice is required to properly replace a metal screen and tighten a thumbscrew that secures the drives in place. The entire drive replacement process can be completed within several minutes. Drive replacement does not void any warranties. The only tool required is a Phillips head screwdriver.
The third advantage of the Thunderbolt Duo is its nearly silent operation. The drives are cooled by air flow, without any fans.
That leads to a significant disadvantage: Only certain drives that generate less heat, such as Western Digital Caviar Green drives may be used inside the Thunderbolt Duo. That was not a big problem for me since most of my files were already on Green drives.
I have ordered a second Thunderbolt Duo. I expect to use a RAID set spanning 4 drives to produce even faster data transfer rates.

By Phillip U.
This drive is fast. Thunderbolt is truly an impressive technology. I have been getting sustained sequential write speeds of around 240 - 250MB/s from an internal SSD to this drive.
But I have to say I was taken by surprise that this drive (and its smaller version the 6TB Thunderbolt Duo) use a different RAID implementation than their cousins - the WD My Book Studio Edition II series. The older drives used a hardware RAID that created a single logical volume such that the OS only saw one volume. With the Thunderbolt Duo units, both drives are seen. At least on my iMac (late 2012) they are. The RAID level is easily configurable using the WD Drive Utilities app. But this app is really just applying the same software-based AppleRAID that could be configured using Apple's own Disk Utility.
Why does this matter? Because I like to use whole disk encryption using FileVault 2. But FileVault does not support software RAID volumes. So I cannot encrypt these drives AND use RAID 0 (striping) or RAID 1 (mirroring). This is a major bummer.
As mentioned, the older MyBook Studio Edition II units created a single logical volume so I can apply whole disk encryption using FileVault. I was assuming I could with these as well, but I learned what assuming does the hard way.
