I ended up using this Seagate Slim drive for my new Macbook that has USB 3.0 support, and it's lightning fast for backups. Before I made this my drive for Time Machine backups, I gave it a thorough beating by copying hundreds of GBs of photos from my desktop to my new Macbook. I was thoroughly impressed at the throughput. Compared to an old Western Digital external over USB 2.0, I finished in less than half the time I had anticipated.
There are minor gripes. The drive is solidly built but very thin so I'm worried that I'll somehow snap it in half. The USB cable itself is maybe 18" long. It doesn't bother me but it might be an issue with some customers. For what it's worth, this drive fits splendidly in a Case Logic VHS-101 Portable Hard Drive Case (Black).
The major gripe on my part is the included Seagate software. The software allegedly contains a NTFS driver so you share this hard drive between Macs and PCs. However, the software kept erroring out while installing it on my Mac. That's too bad because that would have gave another star and made this a near perfect device. The hard drive is still valuable and works well, but one of the good selling points is the included NTFS driver for OS X (normally they're around $20 or so.)
Setup on the drive is non-existent - just plug in and go. It's whisper quiet, which surprised me. I'm used to external drives making slight hums or clicking sounds as they write, but I didn't hear anything.
The cool part about Seagate's GoFlex series is that you're able to remove the adapter in the back and replace it with another such as eSATA or even Thunderbolt so you can put this on your newer Macs. In practice I'm not sure how much this will actually be done. I'd like to try out, but between the cable and adapter, that's an additional $150.
I can't stress this enough: You need to buy an external hard drive for your laptop. Laptops can get lost, stolen or damaged and you could lose your files. For the cost of an external drive, you can make sure you have a backup of your media and memories. And if you need a drive that looks fast and is actually faster, this is a drive that will work well with your laptop. Just beware if you plan on sharing this drive between Mac and PCs.

This is a nice, compact, 500GB USB 3 drive. I plugged the drive into a USB port and it showed up immediately in Windows Explorer. I then installed the Seagate console application. This was far from automatic. I had to use the explorer to work my way through Seagate folders to get to the application. This is both good and bad. The good is that Seagate doesn't automatically install their software on your computer. Too many companies do that. The bad is that it isn't easy to find the ".exe" to install the app. My suggestion is that you save the time and effort. The Seagate console is supposed to perform automatic, continuous backups. It didn't work for me. It did backup my second hard drive, but completely missed all of my C drive documents.
My suggestion is to just wipe out the Seagate folders and treat this drive as a new place to put files. Performance is good and the product appears rugged enough to take being transported in a pocket.

*EDIT* A usb 3.0 version was released and the price was cut from the 2.0 version. Both of those factors mean I'm raising my review from 3 stars to 4.
This drive is advertised as being a perfect mobile solution for making backups of your mac. For the past several years I have been using a rather clunky Lacie 320 gb backup drive (that also functions as a USB hub). It hasn't failed me yet, but you can never have to many backups, so I thought I'd give this drive a whirl.
First - there are two versions of this drive - one is preformated for use with macs, one with windows. The mac version, at least, comes with instructions on how to download a driver to format it for use with windows and macs interchangeably. I personally haven't tried it but other reviewers have (with mixed results), so look to those reviews if you are interested in that functionality.
Lets start with price and specs. This retails for 130, and amazon (of this review) is selling the drive for 100. It is 500 gb, and uses a usb 2.0 interface. This means that your read/write speads will realy be limited by the usb. I, for example, backed up roughly 260gb of data with time machine, and the process took several hours.
In comparison, you can get a 1 tb (1000 gb) western digital passport, with usb 3.0, for the same price. Not only are you doubling your storage space, but you also get usb 3.0 (for much faster transfer speeds, if you have a new computer with usb 3.0). I am purposely using the WD passport for comparison purpose as it is also a small, portable backup solution by a reputable drive manufacturer.
So, this drive's value proposition is rocky, to start. What you are paying for, essentially, is one of the thinnest and lightest backup drives on the market. It is an ounce lighter than the WD passport. It also generates very little heat. I have an older WD passport (about a year old now), and when performing backup operations it gets hot. The Seagate remains cool throughout.
The Seagate comes packaged with some interetsing looking sharing software, which I have no use for. Its easy enough to delete if you don't want it, and if you do want it, its there. A nice little bonus.
In terms of quality, Seagate and Western Digital are both known for making drives quality drives that last, so unless you get a lemon there shouldn't be any issues in the quality department.
Overall, if you need the lightest backup drive on the market I suppose this is a good drive to turn to. However, thats a very, very niche market. Generally you'll either want a larger non-portable drive that can also function as a USB hub (as macs seem to lack a lot of ports, in general), or you'll want want a good portable drive that won't die.
While this seagate is a good portable drive that won't die, for the price you should at *least* be getting usb 3.0 or a 1 tb drive. For a mobile solution you'd probably value speed over size, so usb 3.0 would be preferable. As the WD passport has both double the size and usb 3.0 for the same price, at only an ounce heavier, it is very hard to really recommend this drive over it.
If an update to this model comes out with usb 3.0 I would bump up my star ranking by one (to 4/5), as while it still wouldn't be the best value, at least it could honestly compete based on how light it is.
