Product Description

Ultra-Compact, Ultra-Fast USB 3.0 Performance: With the LaCie Minimus, you've got the power and performance of USB 3.0 combined with a smaller size. Compared to other desktop drives, it's the smallest on the market, which makes it the perfect choice for users that enjoy their terabytes as much as their desk space. It's easy to transfer HD movies, photos, and sound files with USB 3.0-at speeds faster than you ever imagined. Since the LaCie Minimus is backward compatible with USB 2.0, it works on any PC or Mac. Complementing its remarkably small size, the Minimus is encased in sturdy brushed aluminum for an elegant aesthetic appeal. The aluminum offers resilience from blunders, improved heat dissipation, and is fully recyclable. The Minimus also comes with a software suite that makes for a user-friendly experience that includes automated backups, password protection and an additional 10 GB of Wuala cloud storage for your most critical data. An automatic eco mode lowers the power consumption by up to 77% when not in use, increasing the battery life of your notebook or laptop. 4LaCie External HDDs are excellent BUT.......
By Biraj Khosla
I have given the product 4-stars because the product itself is solid. BUT if you want to know what compromises EVERYTHING with their storage products please read on...

Since about 2004 I have bought more than a few of their LaCie External Hard drives, ranging from the 500GB original Porsche design, 1TB Neil Poulton (Black) drives, LaCinema Classic player with 500GB, their new 2TB aluminum top HDD, and now their 3TB USB 3 External HDD. Incidentally I also purchased their LaCie Multimedia player i.e. Mini HD Connect, for which I have a separate review on Amazon.

LaCie is a French company and in my experience ALL their products (except for their LaCinema Classic and the Mini HD Connect) have worked smoothly (touch wood). But the problem with their HDD formatting software and documentation which comes bundled on their drives are a disaster, and sadly this happens consistently. I have found the product descriptions on their website to be excellent. But it is only after you buy their product that the website information is both disorganized or missing or confusing. For example if you want to download any documentation the product names in a product line (e.g. HDDs) are similarly labelled or exactly the same on the weblink. Unless you problem-solve your way out of sheer desperation, which I have done at least a few times by now, it is difficult to figure out which documentation to download. Because woe is you if you download the wrong documentation, and you may end up with a disaster of epic proportions. Even their firmware updates do not have the specific steps to get them installed on the two multimedia devices I have. And I will not even describe the terrible tech support they offer. On one occasion I wrote to the company's CEO who referred the problem to a manager. But alas the manager did not even have rudimentary product knowledge and couldn't figure out what I was referring to. Finally I figured it out on my own. Oh and yes, all their tech support is slower than an icicle melting in a cave (yes I came up with that description because it is slower than molasses in winter).

The last external HDD which I got to work for myself (2TB black-bottomed with aluminum top) I had to format on my own because the formatting software could not even load. I avoided a quick format simply to play it safe because of the importance of my data. It took more than 24-hours. On the occasions when LaCie's external HDD formatting software has worked, it does it in about 15-minutes no matter how large the HDD, at least that is my experience.

But what has prompted me to do THIS review is their USB 3.0 3TB Minimus HDD. Because (and I will try not to bore you with too many details) the formatting software is non-functional and goes into a continuous loop saying it is installing. I have already tried it a few times, twice after reboots. I went to their website, and no surprise, I can't find any information even though at least one other person has also identified the same problem. In browsing their website I found a download called LaCie Desktop Manager and thought I would download it (in the hope that it might help me format the 3TB) but it says in it's documentation that it is not compatible with all LaCie HDDs. After trying to search for a listing (in vain) of the LaCie HDDs compatible with the 3TB I gave up and decided to write this review instead.

BOTTOM-LINE: I have purchased LaCie products despite all the disastrous experiences because their external HDDs (touch wood) have all worked exceedingly well. So you can say I have continued to be loyal to LaCie products despite the LaCie company's best efforts to discourage me. Hopefully these HDDs will continue to work in the future as well as they have in the past. But about the company's efforts to be responsive to customer concerns/feedback, the less said the better.

I hope you find this review helpful.

3Good product but not suitable for automatic backup
By Fonebone
I bought a LaCie Minimus 3TB disk as a replacement for my disk to store backups. The products looks solid and performers very well. Unfortunately it has a major issue that made me exchange it for a WD Elements disk. I'm running an automatic backup in the background and the Minumis disk does not power on automatically, i.e. I have to push the pow button each time which is a nogo for an automatic backup. I talked to support (which is excellent and very responsive even on a Sunday!) but they told me that this cannot be configured :-(

2burned up after a week
By james beauchamp
Lacie makes a beautiful product: very sleek, modern looking. i have purchased their products before. I was excited about having so much space to work with, as my music collection itself is over a terrabyte. but these things tend to run very warm. sometimes it is no problem, but this time, after about a week, my computer ceased recognizing it. when turned on, you could hear the familiar hum, but that would be it. real shame, but i should've just stuck with WD; never once a problem there.
