When you take this Western Digital My Passport Edge external hard drive out of the case, you are immediate struck by how unbelievably thin it is. And with thinness comes lightness. If you are looking for a portable hard drive, with emphasis on portable, this could be the perfect drive for you. It is not just convenient, but fast. If you own a tablet or laptop and want additional storage space, this could be the perfect solution.
Personally, I am a heavy user of media, especially movies, comic books, and music, and because there are so many dead spots where I try to watch movies or read comic books, I have never felt comfortable with the Cloud. Also, call me paranoid, but I feel psychologically happier having my media under my direct control. I currently primarily use a laptop for all of these purposes, but plan on getting the new 8.9 inch HD Kindle Fire (partly for watching videos, mainly for reading comic books) when it becomes available in November 2012. This drive will become absolutely crucial, since the storage space on the Kindle Fire, like all tablets, is minuscule.
Just to note, while this is primarily intended for Macs, this can also be used on Windows-based computers. Just go to Start and then Help and Support, and search for "format hard drive." You'll find info on how to reformat it. But under ideal circumstances, you'll use this with a Mac, given technological enhancements available to Macs that you don't get on Windows machines. Still, if you own a tablet or laptop and need more storage space to hold your media, this will be an outstanding option. I highly recommend it.

This is a nicely machined all metal enclosure hard disk. Yes, even the black part is metal, not plastic as some reviews state, tap it with a metal object and it is readily apparent (for interest of review I scratched the black paint off with a knife and it is certainly metal). It is very slim in every dimension and would slide into a pocket easily. The drive is USB 3.0 which adds a nice bit of performance to a class of drives that tend to be slow, and it receives power over USB so it doesn't need any external supply.
Doing important benchmark tests using "Black Magic Disk Speed Test version 2.1 Copyright 2011" on my iMac and Mac Book running 10.8.2:
This Drive using USB 3 on Mac book: 105 MB/s
This Drive using USB 2 on iMac: 35 MB/s
Internal Drive Mac Book: 60 MB/s
Internal Drive on iMac: 50 MB/s
Thunderbolt LaCie 2big: 280 MB/s in Raid 0/Striped/faster mode.
The results should be comparable since they are all the same tool.
Definitely use this drive with USB 3, it will see roughly 2.5x to 3x improvement. If I had to pick one drive for performance it would be the LaCie in Raid 0, but that is a huge drive that is for home on the desk. This USB 3 drive is actually performing better than my internal drives and is extremely compact and quiet, and the metal case will help dissipate heat. The numbers above are approximately the same for both read and write.
I would buy this drive again, as it performs well, is well built, and is very portable. It includes the USB 3 cable (different from USB 2 on hard drive end, same on computer side), and not much else.

I'll make this review short and tight. Appearance: Beautiful. The case is made of metal and it's very slim and light weight. Compatibility: Wonderful. I plugged it in my Mac Pro and 5 secs later, it was ready to use. Durability: Pretty good. I dropped it once from about 3 feet high, and it survive. Performance: Good. I don't have USB 3.0 but file transferring with the regular USB is faster than usual.
Would recommend it to friends and family.
