By Joe Crescenzi
What makes this a great adapter is that although it was designed from the ground up to work with Seagate's line of drives, it can be used with just about any SATA III device. I've used this adapter with a variety of 2.5" and 3.5" drives, including SSDs and the performance was always super fast.
Since you can easily daisy chain these, I ended up buying 3 of them so far, and I'm considering a fourth.
Two key things to keep in mind. Seagate previously had the same exact device under the name "GoFlex", but as far as I can see, they are identical. Also, they have another version that is portable, which needs no power supply and is designed for 2.5" drives. I must point out that I have both, and that the speeds I measured with the desktop model were faster. I am assuming this may be because they may be using SATA II in the portable version, because the results I got with an SSD were under 300MB/S.

By D. Parvin
The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Thunderbolt Adapter is a specialty device for users who don't have a USB 3.0 connection, who want to daisy chain multiple drives, or who want to do substantial video capture and transfer. A star off for not including a cable along with an interface that's not really necessary for the actual Backup Plus hard drive leaves this at 4 stars.
Thunderbolt is a really neat interface that is at this point somewhat overbuilt for current computers; it's somewhat reminiscent of SCSI 20 years ago, where the impressive capability of the specs rapidly became obsolete with alternate and cheaper technology advances. In this case, the alternate technology, USB 3.0, is already available.
USB 3.0 is more than capable of handling the maximum read/write speed of the fastest SSD drives currently on the market, currently topping around around roughly 500-550 MB/s. For mechanical drives, most 7200 rpm drives top out around 160-190 MB/s; 5400 rpm drives average anywhere between 90-120 MB/s.
As such, using Thunderbolt for those drives is somewhat overkill, and the 7200 rpm drive on the Backup Plus series barely begins to use the Thunderbolt bandwidth as it tops out a little over 160 MB/s on sustained transfers. It's a very easy swap from a Backup Plus USB 3.0 base to the Thunderbolt base and the external drive fits nicely, but when the adapter itself is priced higher than the 7200 rpm drive inside the standard Backup Plus drive, the value proposition here is really problematic.
Where this does make more sense is if you simply don't have a USB 3.0 port available, if you'd like to daisy chain multiple SATA drives, or if you want to work on HD video with something like Blackmagic or Matrox adapters. Unlike the cheaper portable adapter, this does include 2 ports instead of one so it can be part of a chain. However, the portable adapter is a much more stable fit for a 2.5" SSD, as it lays flat on the adapter. A bare drive mounted on the SATA adapter with this unit is going to perch precariously upright. Unless you come up with a Rube Goldberg solution of rubber bands or tape, it's not something you'd want to leave unattended for any length of time.
Finally, this doesn't include the Thunderbolt adapter cable, meaning you're looking at close to $200 for a complete setup - or more than what you're actually paying for a 256 GB SSD nowadays. It's something to consider before purchasing, but if you need multiple external drives or are doing specialty video editing, this is worth a look.

By L. Irish
After trying a Pegasus J4 Thunderbolt Drive Enclosure (didn't work at all with a late 2012 iMac 27"; worked on Mac OSX ML on an Option Boot but DIDN'T work at all with Windows 7), I tried the Seagate Backup Plus Adapter, and it worked perfectly in an external SSD setup... with every SSD I threw at it, a Samsung 840 (256 & 500 Gb) and a Crucial M4 256 gb. Also works with HDDs. Option boot works for both my iMac and for my late 2011 MacBook Pro, for both Mountian Lion and Windows 7. If you're in the market for a REALLY fast boot for your Thunderbolt-equipped iMac or MBP, try one of these with an SSD.
NOTES:
1. You can stick a bare SSD or HDD drive on the Sata connector... it's not a secure setup. You'll need to either buy an empty enclosure to put the drive in (search the web, they're out there, I got a couple at auction cheap) OR just work out some blocks to support it (someone used blocks of sticky notes and a rubber band to secure the drive to the adapter to keep it from wobbling)
2. I wish they'd supplied a cable... they're not cheap.
3. I tested with the Black Magic Disk Test app, and the Seagate wasn't quite as good... but in realworld use, I think you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. Besides, it's relatively cheap, it will daisy chain to most other Thunderbolt devices (including Mini-display port into my Dell U3011, and (to borrow a phrase) It Just Works.
